The This Ability Orchestra helped me with my personal development after facing a debilitating medical issue. The ability for music to bring the best out of me and the other members made me gain a new perspective on my struggles. I realized that working hard no matter your disabilities or shortcomings is far more important and beautiful than being perfect no matter what.

I began playing the violin as a child but almost quit in high school until I joined the This Ability Orchestra (TAO). Teaching violin lessons and connecting with eager students has reignited my passion for music. Around the same time, I volunteered at the YES Organization for Autistic Children, helping them learn violin, build artistic skills, and achieve small successes. Their optimism inspired my own confidence, leading me to take on leadership roles. My experiences at YES and TAO taught me the value of diversity and inclusivity, and I strive to contribute positively to my community.

When we play together, the harmony we create brings us closer, and it feels incredible. The dedication and passion of each musician, no matter their challenges, show the true power of inclusivity. Their enthusiasm for learning has not only made the orchestra a supportive and creative space but has also inspired me to be more confident and hardworking. Seeing their determination has changed how I view work ethic and motivated me to keep going through tough times. I’m excited to continue this journey and grow with such an inspiring group.

Over the past year, working with people with disabilities has profoundly impacted my life by teaching me the importance of clear communication and respect. I initially struggled with how to effectively communicate, but I learned that using hand gestures and small physical touches, like guiding someone toward a destination, helped improve focus and efficiency. Through this experience, I realized that each individual has their own unique communication style, and it’s crucial to treat people with disabilities with the same respect as anyone else. Developing meaningful relationships, just as I would with my friends, has been central to this learning process. These experiences have not only shaped how I interact with people with disabilities but have also influenced how I communicate with my family and others. Respect has become a core value in my life, and I strive to listen, understand, and treat everyone with kindness and dignity. Overall, my journey has helped me grow in both communication skills and in my understanding of respect for all individuals. - Ryan Ryu
